Features

The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition Blu-ray Disc Player is an exciting upgrade based on the highly acclaimed BDP-83. Already well known for its exceptional audio and video performance, the BDP-83 is upgraded with an all new analog audio stage and improved power supply to become the Special Edition. Designed for the discerning audio enthusiast, the OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition Blu-ray Disc Player delivers an exceptionally wide dynamic range, ultra low distortion, accurate sound stage and jitter-free music clarity via its dedicated stereo and 7.1ch analog audio output.

The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition uses the state-of-the-art Sabre32 family of Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC) from ESS Technology. The Sabre32 family is known as one of the industry's highest performance audio DACs and are often found in high-end audiophile and professional equipments. The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition uses an 8-channel Sabre Premier (ES9006) DAC chip for its 7.1 multi-channel output. The dedicated stereo output uses another 8-channel Sabre32 Ultra (ES9016) DAC chip by stacking 4 DACs for each of the Left and Right channels to achieve even greater audio performance.

Just like the BDP-83 it is based on, the OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition is a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player featuring bit-stream and full decoding capability for high resolution audio tracks such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Designed for both home theater viewers and music listeners, it plays DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD) and standard CD with excellent video and audio performance in addition to Blu-ray Discs. For a detailed list of features, please refer to the BDP-83 Features and Specifications page.

OPPO Digital recommends the BDP-83 Special Edition to customers who primarily use the analog audio output to connect to either a dedicated stereo or a multi-channel surround system. For customers who primarily use the HDMI output to connect to an A/V receiver or directly to a TV/projector, and for customers who primarily use the optical/coaxial digital audio output, the standard BDP-83 is recommended.

NuForce Edition

Extracting high-quality audio from Blu-ray players is problematic. The HDMI signal interleaves video and audio data which, upon decoding, produces an inherent jitter as high as 7nanoseconds (For comparison, a good CD player's jitter is in the picosecond range). In practical terms, it is difficult to properly decode HDMI audio without employing extensive reclocking circuits, thus pushing up the cost of a good HDMI audio pre-processor.

The simplest way to improve analog audio performance is at the source. The Oppo BDP-83SE player incorporates ESS Technology's state-of-the-art Sabre DAC, widely acknowledged as one of the industry's best. The 7.1 multi-channel unit employs a single 8-channel Sabre DAC. The stereo channels' dedicated Sabre DAC is achieved by stacking four DACs per left and right channel for utmost transparency and dynamic range.

The Nuforce Edition elevates performance yet further by:

  • Replacing critical analog components with the high-grade equivalents NuForce uses in its high-end audio components
  • Superior high-speed power regulation on both DACs and all analog power rails. Improved power supply regulation also applies to the 7.1 channels
  • High-performance parts and related circuits/component values replacing the stereo channels' monolithic devices.
  • Bypass the Stereo and 7.1 channels' output muting circuits. The SE's relays are better than the standard BDP-83's muting transistors. Nevertheless, imposing as little as possible along critical signal paths is clearly preferable.

The result is a better power supply and optimized analog signal paths. As always, the proof is in the listening. The improvements in stereo (CD, SACD, DVD-A, BD Audio), and L/R/C movie outputs are clearly audible.

The standard Oppo BDP-83SE offers exemplary audio performance. The Nuforce Edition goes a step further in transparency, dynamics, and detail retrieval. As is typical of all Nuforce products, these benefits relate directly to our high-end product line in the preservation of musical truth.

Signature Edition

The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition & NuForce OPPO 83SE Blu-ray Disc Players are an exciting upgrade based on the highly acclaimed OPPO BDP-83 which is being re-badged in a fancy case by some top names such as Ayre, Theta, Lexicon and others. Already well known for its exceptional audio and video performance, the OPPO BDP-83 is now available from OPPO with an all new analog audio stage and improved power supply to become the Special Edition.

Designed for the discerning audio enthusiast, the The NuForce version of OPPO's Award Winning 83 Special Edition All-Format Bluray Disc Player is an exciting upgrade. There are several other manufacturer's also modifying the OPPO 83 Special Edition however they charge $5,000, $8,000 and $10,000! While these high priced manufacturers do offer improved performance in some cases, their results, despite the high pricing, simply has not exceeded The Upgrade Company. Not one of the high priced big name manufacturer modified OPPO 83 Special Editions employs the same high number of cost-is-no-object State of the Art parts, extensive shielding and dampening. Far fewer upgrades then The Upgrade Company is providing it's clients.

Silver Neutrik XLR output jacks replace the 2 channel WBT NextGen RCA outputs. Wiring up both XLR and RCA outputs is very detrimental to sound quality. We've found that replacing the WBT 2ch RCA outputs with a dedicated XLR output stage results in the ultimate in sound quality for the OPPO 83SE. Our balanced output stage is literally twice as good as our RCA output stage.

The Upgrade Company's "Signature Edition" upgraded OPPO 83SE and NuForce 83 Special Edition players provide the some of the highest sound quality possible in the world today. 100% Money Back Guaranteed.

When ordering XLR outputs please go to the top of the Online Shopping page and select "FOR SALE" and on the drop down menu that appears, select "OPPO+NuForce" to which will take you to the OPPO+NuForce options page.

We've tried adding XLR's way over to the side and leaving in the RCA outputs, however in every case it was measured to be detrimental to sound quality and actually hurt the sound quality significantly. Even the RCA sound quality gets knocked down, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. To add XLR outputs and maintain the RCA outputs, 10 times longer wiring is needed to reach all the way over to the smaller sized lesser quality XLR jacks to fit in the tight space on either side of the RS232 port. This kills performance even with the very best of the best wiring. The reason being, there are 5 clocks in all OPPO's radiating a ton of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) within 1" and 2" of the XLR output wires run to the far away XLR jacks. The XLR wires collect this RFI just as any antenna does. Anything metallic collects this constant RFI hash.
This contaminates the audio signal bigtime and shows up on measurements and testing as a drastically reduced Signal to Noise Ratio (S/N ratio). In fact this heavy dose of constant RFI contaminates everything in the player and is one of the reasons why the stock OPPO 83SE player is an $800 player that exhibits nowhere near the performance of a State of the Art digital front end, like our modded 83SE players do, after we address the RFI contamination issues and after replacing more then 100 parts in the stock player. We've spent a lot of time fine tuning and developing our balanced XLR output stage for the OPPO based players and the result is superb.

We've double blind multiple participant A-B compared all of our competitors OPPO 83SE player mods and we've made sure our players are far ahead of them in both measurements and actual performance. That's why we're the only modification/upgrade company who can boldly put a "100% Buy Back Guarantee" on our upgrades. Once you hear our performance, you'll know why our players never come back.

Each NuForce player has been entirely expertly maximized for Ultra High Performance, from the IEC inlet and wiring to WBT NextGen Ag Silver RCA output jacks. Over 100 new State of the Art high cost electronic parts have been installed based upon extensive listening and blind testing comparisons using our OPPO 83 Special Edition lab prototype players. The main power supply is upgraded, the wiring is upgraded, the motherboard and all 5 clocks are upgraded. All local power supplies for the dacs, video, transport, analog output circuits are all upgraded. All circuitry has been upgraded including the analog, digital, and video circuits. All of the original functionality remains.
All of the NuForce modifications remain.
